Dissent generally means expressing your disapproval against a widely held public view. Disagreement against any popular opinion may cause a person to express his or her dissent. Since, our mind is free to think in any direction, there may exist a difference of opinion amongst people, in a group. In the words of Natan Sharansky, “Free societies are societies in which the right to dissent is protected.”
In a democracy, every person has the freedom of speech and expression. So, they are free to express their dislike or disapproval for any popular opinion, which is held by the masses. In the words of James W. Fulbright, “In a democracy, dissent is an act of faith. Like medicine, the test of its value is not in its taste, but in its effects.” While expressing dissent, one must take care that we don’t end up slandering someone or jeopardise someone’s integrity.
