Elections means a planned and well-defined criteria or procedure, on the basis of which, a candidate is selected for any post of office. Elections in all major democracies are held, where the population is given a chance to choose the leader of their choice, by casting a vote in his favour. The candidate, who wins the majority votes, is elected to provide his services for some particular post of office. According to Gore Vidal, “Apparently, a democracy is a place where the numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.”
The elected officials are supposed to be eminent personalities, having the qualities required to hold the particular seat in office. In the words of Thomas E. Mann, “America is an outlier in the world of democracies when it comes to the structure and conduct of elections.” Elections form the basis and the life-blood of democracy.
