Proverbs are words of wisdom. These are sayings of our forefathers or ancestors which bring to light some truth or fact. Proverbs are based on experiences of our forefathers. Proverbs are short expressions of popular wisdom. Proverbs originate from the Latin word “proverbium” meaning concrete statement. Proverbs may be philosophical, spiritual or practical. Writers use proverbs to add quality to their work and concretize their opinion. Proverbs can be metaphorical, maxim or aphorism. Irish proverbs mostly have a satirical tone. Italian proverbs are precise and crisp, based on voyages and discoveries. Arabic proverbs are mostly couplets, having a rhythmic tone. In the words of John Bunyan, “Our heart oft times wakes when we sleep, and God can speak to that, either by words, by proverbs, by signs and similitude’s, as well as if one was awake.”
