Selfishness is the state of being selfish. When one is selfish, one just cares about one’s self interests and is very self-centred. Someone is selfish if he or she exclusively thinks for his interest, benefit and happiness. Self preference is almost similar to selfishness. In the words of Elihu Root, “Human nature must have come much nearer perfection than it is now, or will be in many generations, to exclude from such a control prejudice, selfishness, ambition, and injustice.” Selfishness drives one to direct his purposes and aims to the advancement of his own interest, power and happiness, without being considerate about others. Selfishness corrupts and perverts the mind. In the words of George A. Smith, “Our enemies are our evil deeds and their memories, our pride, our selfishness, our malice, our passions, which by conscience or by habit pursue us with relentlessness past the power of figure to express.”
