It help a lot. And make thing easier to get Visa. As long as you have no record in terrorist activities or close with it, I think you won't get hard time to get US Visa.
I experience it before. US visa is harder to get if you compare Europe. I have no islamic background and go to vacation in US by Tour. Even with that background, I barely get US Visa.
The second, if you are in productive age (15-40) it also hard, because US, afraid you become an immigrant and leech their country. Make sure you explain it clearly the reason to go to US.
Here the tricky part. I am not being racist but if you have Islamic based background such as name (Muhammad, Ahmad, and etc), As a muslim, or from conflicted muslim country. It gonna hard to get US Visa.
Make sure your country have diplomatic relationship. Go to the US embassy, apply it and make an appointment (i think you can apply online but I personally prefer apply directly at the embassy). Waiting for severals day they will call you to interview in the US embassy. After the interview you need to wait several day until they call you to inform do you get the visa or not.
