Socialism is a theory which targets complete social resurrection or reconstruction of the society. Socialism aims to bridge the gap or divide between the rich and the poor. It aims to bring about a more proper and equitable distribution of property and labour.
This is essential so as to bring about a sort of equality in the society. In the words of Benjamin Tucker, “Almost the only persons who may be said to comprehend even approximately the significance, principles, and purposes of Socialism are the chief leaders of the extreme wings of the Socialistic forces, and perhaps a few of the money kings themselves.” In popular and general language, it actually pertains to any revolutionary scheme which aims at bringing about a complete metamorphosis of the society. Communism, Fourierism etc. are some common forms of socialism. According to George Orwell, “As with the Christian religion, the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents.”
