Tact is defined as some sort of sensitive mental touch. Tact is also used to describe some peculiar skill or faculty. A person who has the ready power of appreciating and doing what is required by circumstances is said to be tactful. Tactics are the methods or ways employed to deal with something tactfully. In the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes, “Don't flatter yourself that friendship authorizes you to say disagreeable things to your intimates. The nearer you come into relation with a person, the more necessary do tact and courtesy become.” The word “tact” may also be used to describe the sense of touch or feeling. Any stroke in beating time may also be referred to as “tact”. In the words of Charles Horton Cooley, “A man may lack everything but tact and conviction and still be a forcible speaker; but without these nothing will avail... Fluency, grace, logical order, and the like, are merely the decorative surface of oratory.”
