If anything this is one of the better ways to write together and not get stuck in the studio. Its a really good, open-ended format.

Radiolarians I was the biggest challenge, because it was something new. In a way its unbalanced; I actually wrote two tunes in there, which is very unusual for me. The difference is there are more individual composers in I. On the other two records we collaborated 100 percent on everything; you can hear that. Radiolarians II is really strong, original material, but on III there are more cinematic pieces.

Its different. We try to keep it as open to development as possible. Sometimes someone will bring in an idea, other times well just improvise together, whether its in front of an audience or during rehearsal. And then we take notes on what seems to work, where we can go from there, talk about it, play some more. Once we have the seed of an idea, which could be a simple little melody or a mood or a beat, and then the other two kind of react to that in a session and then everyone starts collaborating. And people say, you should play this bass line, or you should play with less notes. We kind of direct each other. It's usually a real collective thing, a democracy, like a conversation.

It was just another way for us to put out more material in a shorter amount of time. We don't want to play the same set of music for a year. A lot of bands tour on one record, play all those tunes, then burn out on it. We can't do that. So this is our way of breaking up our writing.

I would say totally, but not consciously. We decided to do this I dont know when before a lot of changes happened. I think its natural for a musician that, especially if youre in touch with where music really comes from, youre going to be in tune with whats goin on. Its not an intentional thing, like were going to be political. Were reacting to whats going on. Thats kind of how music works as a force in the world. As a healing force or whatever it is music doesas an inspiring force, its got to interact with whats going on. I had never even thought about that before until you just said that. Its definitely 100% what its all about. We go deep within ourselves to create, were not conscious musicians

Were just trying to create a certain energy together. Were trying to get to a certain place and that involves the audience. Its almost like you cant and every venue is different its almost like you even separate the venue, the audience. Theres a feeling you get from the room and people in it. Sometimes you cant even see the people and sometimes they are right in your face. Every room is so different.

Its like when you meet someone for the first time. Whether you feel a strong expectation that maybe is so strong that maybe it makes you want to go this way instead of the way that they want to go. Ultimately in general, were focused on whats going on on the stage, in the music. There is a lot of improvisation going on, and the feel of the music is so important that most of our attention is on each other. Just listening to whats happening and not whatever is going on out there.

If we could cut the money out and just create music all the time and just maybe this plan of making money doing music...

Yeah, in a way we created it as a form for us to work with. Hey, how can we structure the year so that we can lose as much money as possible and make as much music as possible?

Get us in a room together. Give us a deadline. Well come up with a bunch of stuff.

Its allowing us to do that. Its easy for us. I mean we could do 5x as many records, its just a matter of you know it takes time to record, its gotta be mixedits not a question of coming up with the material. This is just a chance for us to open a few more holes in the creative box to let some stuff out. Its in there all the time.

Well, thats why we created this schedule for seasonal recording where we write a set of music for that time that were in, whatever were into and that makes us produce more. We are the kind of people that can create that, and by setting this schedule up we finally are getting more music out. We could record a arecord every day.

All the music weve been releasing, its a lot this past year. So were busier working on the music, recording it than others years so thats the difference. Then how do we release a CD every 4 months for the past year and now a boxed set.

I dont know, I guess weve never been one of those bands that makes most of their income from CD sales. We make it from touring, but from a managers or business point of view trying to manage the music that gets out into the world since CD sales are so down, you try to take advantage of all these others avenues. But just to get all that happening creates so much work because instead of just dealing with the record company, you are dealing with this website, that website, your MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon.com, its so much to keep track of. Its exciting and challenging.

Well, I mean its different now becuase you know, in the early days it was the three of us gathering names and sending things and actually making the shirts and all that stuff.

It seems like for everything thats inspiring and exciting about it, therere things that are overwhelming and bogging down the business side of it and we were just talking to our manager recently about this because there are so many different avenues to put out music, and because of that its been created for a manager. There is exponentially more work because all these little things require decisions and contracts and managing of some sort or another or paperwork, you know, its just an incredible amount of work.

Its complicated its hard to know how people are talking about the music, passing it around, buying it, and ripping it or whatever. Its hard to know. The internet makes it less transparent, in a way.

I mean, we never ever really did it like that, really. I mean, you know, we loosely did it like that, but we never had, sort of, like the latest tunes that were hits. I guess we trained our audience early on by just playing whatever we want, when we want. *laughs* They sort of get what they get. But I think for this process, part of the incentive to set it up this way where we write new music, tour, record, three times is that it is a way for us to write a whole bunch of new music together. And we didnt have the constraints of a tradional record deal since we were doing it ourselves. We put out a lot more material, and weve always wanted to do that becuase its so long in a traditional record deal between each record. Its like a year and a half sometimes, and by the time the record comes out youre already sick of the music.
