What I try to do is to go into a poem - and one writes them, of course, poem by poem - to go into each poem, first of all without having any sense whatsoever of where it's going to end up.

Justin Bieber on my notebooks and my pens. Justin Bieber is my very best friend. Justin Bieber posters, I pretend he's kissin me. Justin Bieber bulbs on my Christmas tree. Justin Bieber's initials on all my winter clothes. Justin Bieber needs to take me out to dinner, though.

In a manner of speaking, the poem is its own knower, neither poet nor reader knowing anything that the poem says apart from the words of the poem.

The poet is in the end probably more afraid of the dogmatist who wants to extract the message from the poem and throw the poem away than he is of the sentimentalist who says, "Oh, just let me enjoy the poem."

In this metaphor we actually have a picture of the computational universe, a metaphor which I hope to make scientifically precise as part of a research program.

If that voice that you created that is most alive in the poem isn't carried throughout the whole poem, then I destroy where it's not there, and I reconstruct it so that that voice is the dominant voice in the poem.

Flower was a good metaphor for growth. The song is obviously about s..ual responsibility, so that was the main metaphor. Also, it's like knowing who someone has been and remembering and appreciating that, but really appreciating what they are now even more.

You might laugh because every time I sign my name I put a gold star after it, but its a metaphor, and metaphors are important. My gold stars a metaphor for me being a star.

If we are a metaphor of the universe, the human couple is the metaphor par excellence, the point of intersection of all forces and the seed of all forms. The couple is time recaptured, the return to the time before time.

If you read quickly to get through a poem to what it means, you have missed the body of the poem.

I can't tell you where a poem comes from, what it is, or what it is for: nor can any other man. The reason I can't tell you is that the purpose of a poem is to go past telling, to be recognised by burning.

What we call a poem is mostly what is not there on the page. The strength of any poem is the poems that it has managed to exclude.

Obviously there have been some very poor uses of evolution in the 20th century. Social Darwinism for instance and we point out in the book that that's not a viable way of using evolutionary knowledge. What's going on with society is entirely different from what goes on in nature. We make that distinction clear. And I use anarchy as a metaphor. I think good literature, whether it's fiction or non-fiction, still has to have a good deal of metaphor in it.

No poem, not even Shakespeare or Milton or Chaucer, is ever strong enough to totally exclude every crucial precursor text or poem.

If I were to agree to write the music for your beautiful poem, it would tie your poem up for some years as I have agreements and obligations which I must respect.

Perhaps first and foremost is the challenge of taking what I find as a reader and making it into a poem that, primarily, has to be a plausible poem in English.
