Twins is the plural for twin i.e. one of the two children or animals born at the same birth and are more or less identical. Biologically speaking, twins can either be ‘identical’ meaning that they develop from one zygote that splits and forms two embryos, or ‘fraternal’ because they develop from two separate eggs that are fertilized by two separate sperm. According to John K. Speke, “Twins are usually hailed with delight, because they swell the power of the family, though in some instances they are put to death.” The word ‘twins’ is quite often used symbolically to relate to a pair of identical things like ‘Body and spirit’ are considered to be twins. Similarly ‘strength and my weakness are twins’ are twins of the same womb. Twins are born by chance of fate, you don’t actually prepare for them. In the words of Josh Billings, “There are only two things in life for which we are never truly prepared: twins.”
