Welfare means a kind of social service provided to all and sundry so as to elevate the standard of living in any country. Welfare in United States and Canada harps on providing financial aid to the poor. While in Europe, welfare is dealt as a kind of universal service that is provided to the poor as well as the rich without any caste or gender bias. The word “welfare” has originated from the word “valfard” which means standard of life in a much broader sense. Government of each nation indulges in all the social and welfare activities. Welfare activities or universal service without any barriers like social stigma are also performed by several charities, NGO’s, religious groups, social groups etc. According to James H. Douglas, “A good job is more than just a paycheck. A good job fosters independence and discipline, and contributes to the health of the community. A good job is a means to provide for the health and welfare of your family, to own a home, and save for retirement.”
