Zen is basically the name given to the Mahayana school of Buddhism. It is derived from the Sanskrit word “dhyana” which means to meditate. Zen believes that it is mandatory to experience wisdom in order to attain salvation and enlightenment. Theory and its abundant knowledge won’t guide you to enlightenment. The sure-shot path that can aid you in attaining enlightenment is the path of mediation or the dharma practise. According to Matthew Sweet, “There are things that I value now that I didn't when I first went over there, like Zen Buddhism, which has become part of my life over the last couple years.” Zen was founded as a distinct school of Buddhism in China in the 7th century. Then, it gradually made way and was founded in Vietnam, Korea and Japan. Zen’s establishment is said credited to Bodhi dharma, the South Indian prince who had transformed himself into a monk. In the words of John Bradshaw, “Children are natural Zen masters; their world is brand new in each and every moment.”
