They scared because society is very cruel, if you are weak, you will be in trouble. To be independent you need to prove it before. Little by little from the small thing such as being responsible person. Yes, they are afraid maybe you will take a wrong turn in life, but if you try to prove how capable you are as a responsible man. I think it will ease their doubt about you.

Urmm I think it's because our parents love us a little too much and also because they want to protect us for as long as they could.... I'm not sure.. Just guessing
