First of all, anything Ryan Murphy is a part of is a good idea to be a part of. He's got just such a clear vision. So, I knew the project was going to be great. I liked the fact it combined music, as well. It was an opportunity for me to showcase some of that part of my life. Plus, the writing is dope! It's great writing and good music.

They did want me to get in shape for a particular scene, as opposed to me getting in character mentally before we shot. I had to get in character physically. For the pilot, I knew the character was a football player so I wanted to bulk up and gain as much weight as possible. So, I put on about twenty pounds. For one scene, they wanted me to be toned so I lost about thirty pounds. It was kind of an extreme experience.

We all knew it was a good group right away, but personally I am bonding with people still and more and more. I think that's good. I love everybody on the show and I'm not just saying that. They've grown on me over time, like any group of people will. We've gotten more and more close as the months go on. Hopefully, they feel that way and it is a lot of fun. It's a good group. I'm very lucky to be a part of this group of talented Broadway singers and hardworking actors. Everyone in the cast has a real interesting story of how they got there.

One moment would be shooting a scene with Kristen Chenowith where she is singing. I was sitting right in front of her and she was just belting it out. She can let loose like no other! She's singing a song and it was pretty much directly to me. I was sitting right in front of her and she was singing it to the group of people I was in. It was one of those moments where I thought, 'Wow! How did I end up here?' She is so beautiful and talented.

I was planning on moving back to maybe Austin and trying my luck there. I enrolled in an acting class and sent out 100 packets with a head shot and r�sum�. I sent them to 50 different agents and 50 different managers and one manager called me.

I had knee surgery about four months before the audition, and I cut my hair in a mohawk. I don't know why, but I did. So I decided to do it again for this audition because of this part; maybe it would make me stand out from the rest of the guys. Lo and behold, it worked out. And now I'm stuck with it.

I've been playing piano since I was 5, and started writing when I was 6 or 7. It was never a revelation I had, it was just what I did. Playing music was always a part of my life, I don't know anything else.

Growing up, I was into that '90s grunge movement like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I've gone through every phase, I'll be into country music for a while, or rap music. Now I'm just a snob, I only listen to smooth jazz and that's about it.
