Shonda kept the bedroom scene a secret from us until the read-through. The script just said: 'Scene to be given at read-through.' It was kind of cool, everybody read it at the same time. So it made for quite an exciting read-through. Then you see how horrible it all turned out.

I've never been called that to my face before, so I think that when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself. I was under no delusions, though. My friends on the set knew. We talked about it. Publicly, it's not my thing to call up People Magazine and be like, 'Hey, you wanna know something about me?' I could have just let it slide and not say anything, but it became important for me to make the statement.

Everyone has their own path. You just have to respect that. I don't know what it's like to be in their shoes. I know a lot of people who make statements, but you have to do it when it's right for you. It don't think it's right to force that. It's impossible to know...There's a lot of soul searching you have to do.

You are taught you are wrong, that you are bad. So you don't do anything, and you wrap yourself in a little straitjacket, and you put yourself in your little room. 'Don't do it! Don't look at someone, don't touch them, don't kiss them, don't do anything!' Then maybe it's OK. I mean, sure, that plagued me all through childhood, you know, in so many ways, and that's stuff that's hard to get away from. But you have to, and eventually, you know, you do.
