I love a girl in her underwear, first of all. Secondly, I've been writing for them, so Nicole Scherzinger has been in my head for probably the past three months. Akon is a very talented songwriter to work with. His melodies, they're just insane. It's funny, I think about him a lot when I'm doing my melodies because he's so simple, and he's just been great. He keeps me on my feet, very grounded, but he also puts me on a silver platter, which is always very nice. So it's been an incredible influence. It's like every time you work with somebody that's better that you are, you become greater.

Because anyone that's found me now I really think is grabbing on to the ideas that I have, more than anything. It's about the music but it's also about the story. I remember going to gym class one day and there was all kinds of profanity written all over my gym locker...Just mine. And it just said the most horrendous, awful things, ranging from sexual orientation to race to religion to social status. And it sticks with you and it hurts. And I went home and I cried. I didn't want to go to school.

Id never let any man come before my career. I guess theres some fear inside of me which makes me this way. My music is never going to roll over in bed one morning and tell me that it doesnt love me any more. I have a big problem with rejection.

I actually made a choice to keep my life pretty normal. At some point about two years ago I said to myself, 'OK, am I going to put my toe in Hollywood's pond and figure out if I want to live a glamorous life and assimilate to the glamorous lifestyle?', but I really didn't want to do it. And I don't like Hollywood and I don't like the whole scene and I just said, 'I'm going to go home and figure out how to be the first popstar to live in the same neighbourhood for the rest of their life that I grew up in', and that's what I do. I still live where I always lived. I still hang out and drink whisky at the same bars. I still go to the same hardware store.
