What I try to do is to go into a poem - and one writes them, of course, poem by poem - to go into each poem, first of all without having any sense whatsoever of where it's going to end up.

Listening to someone telling a story and thinking to yourself, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie.

In a manner of speaking, the poem is its own knower, neither poet nor reader knowing anything that the poem says apart from the words of the poem.

The poet is in the end probably more afraid of the dogmatist who wants to extract the message from the poem and throw the poem away than he is of the sentimentalist who says, "Oh, just let me enjoy the poem."

I want someone to lie to me. To tell me everything is ok, that it wont hurt, and that I'm making the right choice.

If that voice that you created that is most alive in the poem isn't carried throughout the whole poem, then I destroy where it's not there, and I reconstruct it so that that voice is the dominant voice in the poem.

So maybe the elite girls arn't for me, but one of these days I'm going to meet a girl who really loves me and maybe she wont be what you call hot but I'll think she's beautiful and I'll tell her so. I wont be mean to her because I wont have to play games with her. I'll just be the guy she can always count on and that'll be enough, and she'll be elite to me.

What we call a poem is mostly what is not there on the page. The strength of any poem is the poems that it has managed to exclude.

I can't tell you where a poem comes from, what it is, or what it is for: nor can any other man. The reason I can't tell you is that the purpose of a poem is to go past telling, to be recognised by burning.

No poem, not even Shakespeare or Milton or Chaucer, is ever strong enough to totally exclude every crucial precursor text or poem.

If I were to agree to write the music for your beautiful poem, it would tie your poem up for some years as I have agreements and obligations which I must respect.

Perhaps first and foremost is the challenge of taking what I find as a reader and making it into a poem that, primarily, has to be a plausible poem in English.

Translation makes me look at how a poem is put together in a different way, without the personal investment of the poem I'm writing myself, but equally closely technically.
