The term Mafia is one used to describe a secret criminal organization that engages itself in various crimes in order to make money. A mafia is usually structured in a hierarchy as military organizations would structure their selves, and they engage in such activities as the sneaking of illegal items into the country and the sale of illegal items such as drugs, and guns. There are more than likely different Mafia organizations all around the world who partake in these kinds of crimes if not worse, in order to make the most amount of money possible. The word mafia was used in the late 1800’s to describe a small secret society of criminals that lived in Sicily, Italy, and before that the word Mafia represented a group of people who showed much hostility to the law in the Sicilian culture. There are still thought to be a few groups who coin themselves as a “mafia” in our present day society.
