Never become friends with someone you're inlove with. It'll never work. you'll always feel that attachment with them and thats no good for you. Itll only hurt you to be friends with someone you want to be with. But if you dont want them I guess theres nothing wrong to be friends with them.

It could be because they really care about that person and would like to keep him or her around but just not be in a relationship.

If you really caree about them the mature thing to do is just be their friend, just cause you guys arent together doesnt mean you cant be friends.

It is not right or wrong to become their friend. Usually people say that so that they give you some kind of false confidence or some kind of comfort so that your feelings are not too hurt.
