I would reather choose to be mean that to be called liar. Mean is being frank and saying things directly without hesitations and pretentions while liar is full of drama as if you're listening to a radio anthology.
I would rather be mean than be called a liar because if you lie to someone or someone lies to you, then that trust is broken. Some people just don"t want to accept the truth when they need to.
