On the one hand, pride seeks a positive assessment of one's actions, that is, esteem in one's competency. On the other hand, pride seeks esteem of oneself as the author of those actions, that is, esteem of one's worthiness. Pride results in being able to look at one's accomplishments and say both I did it and It is good.
