Love is hard to define because it is deeper than imagined, and bigger than thought. Read 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13, that's where I read any time the question comes up.
I think the true essence of life is to be able to love freely and be loved in return but humanity is abusing this awesome gift of God handed down to mankind to experience.
