Women have to make decisions and its the toughest thing ever. Is it a man or is it a career? I was with a man once who couldnt understand that other things could come first. I tried not to let them but then I was just unhappy, I had to break away. I know I run the risk of being alone for ever, but its the price Ill have to pay.

I always felt kind of like an outsider...in pop music, and just from high school and I remember Lady Starlight looked over at me and said, If she can do it, you can do it, So I always felt like Amy had opened a door for girls like me who didnt fit that exact real pop mold and real wholesome. She was really special, And shes gonna be greatly missed.

I was very depressed when I was 19. I decided to pursue music, so I dropped out of school and I told my parents I didn't want any money from them. I got three jobs and I just hit the ground running. I would go back to my apartment every day and I would just sit there. It was quiet and it was lonely. It was still. It was just my piano and myself. I had at television and I would leave it on all the time just to feel like somebody was hanging out with me. And especially during the period when I was doing cocaine. It was like the drug was my friend. I never did it with other people. It's such a terrible way to fill that void, because it just adds to that void, because it's not real.

In my earlier days of writing for myself, I wanted songs to be more complex. I thought they had to be for me to be taken seriously as an artist. But writing for other people, you get to learn things about yourself and take on their insecurities. Now I can appreciate and incorporate more simplicity in lyrics and melody.
