For every part I get, there are probably three that I don't get. There is no real reason to get discouraged if you enjoy it enough, and if you remind yourself not to take it personally. It can be a challenge to avoid getting upset, but there is absolutely nothing you can do. There are often moments when I feel it's necessary to yell and cry over losing a role, but there's always something else around the corner... I've gotten to a point where I forget completely about an audition after it's over or at least I try to, and I move on as if I know I didn't get it. It may sound like a defeatist attitude, but it's important for the survival of your sanity as an actor.

In high school I did some musicals, but I never took acting until college. I was studying opera, classical voice, and a speech teacher asked me to audition for this play and I got the lead. And she helped me to get into a conservatory, with a scholarship as a singer, and then I was accepted into the acting conservatory. This agent saw me, the summer before I went to conservatory, and while I was in school, I started working right away.

Summer of '93. I spent that summer shooting a movie on eight millimeter video with two of my best friends, who made me audition for the role. And, I just found-I don`t know, I had a moment of clarity. I was like 'this is what I'm supposed to do.' I know that seems hard to believe at nineteen, but I was nineteen when I made that decision. And I haven't had a single regret. It's extremely fulfilling to do what I do. It really is. Now, obviously, when I do something bad, it will be a little bit different. It`ll be 'you were great in Barbershop.'

Because of the dyslexia I always thought I had to work twice as hard as everyone else just to go the same distance. And I think that gave me a real kick as a kid and a lot of fight and a lot of drive later on, like when I broke my back. And now, whenever I prepare for a meeting I am always over prepared. So for the Lord Of The Rings audition, for example, I really prepared it thoroughly. In one sense, I guess that I'm grateful; it gave me that drive, and so far it's paid off.

Not really but I did end up auditioning for a Broadway show. It's kind of a sad story - I did go through a whole audition process which ended with a phone call: We have good news and bad news, the good news is that you got the part and the bad news is that the production is getting cancelled. So there you have it, I was almost on Broadway.

I do love music and I did actually have my own band once. It was a rap band. I was eight and we were called Caution. It was my two friends, they called me and said, Were in a band called Caution. And I was like, Can I be in it? So they made me audition! I had to sing down the phone even though we were a rap group. But they let me be in it. I really thought it was a big deal.

I laugh at that because heres a little secret that no Asian actor will ever tell you. Every Asian has to read and has read a role and has performed a role that has required an accent. That is the business you guys have set up for us, all right. Thats just the way its done and thats fine but to me, is my job to make fun of that stereotype, to poke fun at the stupid holes that are supplied to us to be honest and we get ridiculous lines that we audition for all the time.

I was working on Broadway in New York, and the Broadway strike happened, and my costar was working on a pilot with Ryan Murphy out here in Los Angeles. I met Ryan and we just had a great night talking about Barbara Streisand and our shared love for her and musical theater and what not, and I never saw him ever again. Glee was the first audition I went on in Los Angeles and Ryan was there, and I went, Do you remember me? and he was like, Of course I remember you. After going through the studio and the network, he then told me that he had written it with me in mind.

Playing Arthur, I'm sorry to sound sappy, but it was a gift from the Gods. I've always been a working actor and I've always made my living in acting for a long time. I'd been auditioning for that show, I knew the casting directors pretty well. Arthur was the fifth character I auditioned for on the show. They kept bringing me in for parts and not finding anything for me. I actually wasn't supposed to audition for the part of Arthur, I was auditioning for one of the gay choir members from David's choir. Then I read about that part and went, 'Oh my God, that's perfect for me.' And I asked permission to read for it right then and there. I went in and auditioned without any preparation whatsoever and I think that probably helped me because I didn't overthink it. It was an amazing experience. Those shows are so well written and so well acted they're like little one-hour movies. So in a way I got to do like twelve or thirteen little one-hour movies as a very interesting and complex character. Everyone was really cool. Alan Ball, all the artists behind that show, were just so supportive and great and that really helped launch my career. I'm really grateful to the show for that.
