I think up until the point when we started in the business, which was in the early '70s, most of the humor was political. The smart humor was political satire.

I love, like, old vintage jackets and had this one that said Cobra on it from the Sylvester Stallone movie. And I had another one, it was like a total Michael Jackson jacket with the zippers and stuff from the '80s, and on the back it said Starship Disco, so I just put both of them together.

But the two of them together, broke my heart. Olympia and Peter, those scenes... When they're kissing in their 20s and then kissing in their 70s, that's what it is. And they had never met five minutes before they shot those scenes.

See, with the soul music of the 70s, you could make love, have kids, raise your kids! It was life music!

After that I didn't listen to music as much because '70s music just wasn't... I remember all the songs, but it wasn't because I was into them, you know what I mean?

In my professional work with the Agency, by the late '70s, I had come to question the value of a great deal of what we were doing, in terms of the intelligence agency's impact on American policy.

Well, I think one of the reasons Chicago became so popular as a filmmaker location is because New York had been used so many times that Chicago, I think, was rediscovered maybe in the late '60s, early '70s for a long time as a new location.

Even in the 80s, it was life music! Even in the 90s, there was still life music being made.

I have always hired people of different ages. Young people and older people. People in their 70s and in their 20s. People who are fully capable of talking back to me.

I'd pick a young white guy over an old white guy for president anytime because the younger guy is more likely to have been influenced by the great social changes of the '60s and '70s.

I'd been to Memphis before, but we stayed out of Memphis early on in the late 70s for obvious reasons. People were very sensitive about Elvis Presley, and my stage name obviously would be provocative to some people in that area at that time.

I feel like that I'm learning all the time. I'm learning from new artists, from established artists... every time I listen to '70s rock 'n' roll records, I'm learning. And I think that I'm just now starting to get a hold on what I do.

It's funny...a lot of people think I take myself seriously because I come off so serious sometimes. But it's not that I take myself seriously, I take what I do seriously. I came up around people who took acting seriously, who cared about acting, cared about the theater and, in the '70s, made movies that said something that mattered. I came up with those people, and I was a kid. Their ethos and credo became mine.

Happy Days was about a family... although the show was shot in the 70s, it was about a family in the 50s. I realized that kids were watching their parents grow up and the parents were watching themselves grow up. That was the key to the success of our show.

I can definitely say that music is taking a turn [toward] the electro, somewhat 80s-inspired music. I feel like its kind of evolving back to that, and music kind of repeats itselflike, at one point in time hip-hop was dominating, and we had that moment, at one point in time R&B songs that were really melodic were dominating. Were at a point where the records that have an extra sprinkle of pop in them, or the more electro sound are starting to become more [prevalent], and are starting to be consistent throughout the music at radio.

I had been trying to do something with music for all of my life. Ive always been a fan of music; I always loved music from the early 80s. I used to break-dance, DJ, all of that. So I always loved music. Its just that once I got myself established, you know, I started out in the streets doing the wrong thing first. But once I got my money together and myself established, instead of somebody thats trying to rap, like Bleu and them, getting out there trying to sell drugs or anything to make their careers flourish, I [thought I] could help them with what I have. And thats basically what it was between Bleu, Jeezy and everybody. I was trying to help them out. Jeezy was even rapping before he met me. But nobody was listening to the shit until he was around me, until we was listening to it and Im making/paying the djs play it. Thats basically how it is. I always wanted to be in the music business. A lot of my friends [have] always been in entertainment. If you hang out in Atlanta, everybody t

I remember when you couldnt even mention environmental issues without a snicker. But then in the 70s people got tired of seeing the Cuyahoga River catch on fire from all the chemicals. So one day millions of Americans marched. Politicians had no choice but to take notice. Twelve Congressmen were dubbed the Dirty Dozen, and soon after seven were kicked out of office. The floodgates were opened. We got the Clean Air Act, The Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water. We created the EPA. The quality of life improved because concerned citizens made their issues matter in elections.

This is a deeply uncanny and very troubling development, it exists, and it wants to take us back. It wants to take us, I mean, way back. I mean sure, they want to go back before the 70s and the 60s to the 50s, no doubt about that. They also want to go back before the New Deal to the 20s, well they also want to go back before the Progressive Era to the Gilded Age. Well, not quite, they also want to go back before the Emancipation Proclamation to the days of slavery, not even, what they want to do is take us back to a moment prior to the Enlightenment; they want to take us back to a moment when faith registered more than reason. They want to take us back to an imaginary age of absolute moral clarity, when good was good and evil was evil and everyone could see the difference. They want to take us back to an imaginary Manichean age when youre either with us or against us, which means you either are us or well exterminate you because we can only tolerate ourselves, we can only tolerate thos
