Loneliness is the state of being alone. When you are lonely, there is no friend or well-wisher in your vicinity to provide you some comfort or company. Man wants some company and a song and band to cheer him up, when he is low. Loneliness can be extremely deadly and can even drive a person into extreme depression. Lawrence Durrell had once remarked, “I had become, with the approach of night, once more aware of loneliness and time - those two companions without whom no journey can yield us anything.”
Loneliness is very much needed at times, though. When you need peace and relaxation, you need to give yourself some time alone to unwind. People who are gregarious and easily mix with others are hardly seen alone, while reticent people are mostly seen lonely. In the words of Lorraine Hansberry, “A woman who is willing to be herself and pursue her own potential runs not so much the risk of loneliness, as the challenge of exposure to more interesting men - and people in general.”
