News, news, news - that is what we want. You cannot beat news in a newspaper.

I went crazy. I was sending angry letters to every newspaper editorial board in the country. It was designed to step on Soul Train and destroy it. But d..k and I finally met up at ABC, and they agreed not to do it anymore. Its something I never talk about because I dont want to embarrass d..k Clark. He was very gifted at what he was doing. The only problem was that he was very white, and I thought it could be done another way.

The first trip was with my high school band and the second was a graduation gift to me and a few other guys playing over there in a big band setting. It was exciting seeing positive newspaper articles about my playing in Italy, receiving all sorts of accolades and feeling the excitement of interaction with the crowd. It was a tremendous rush, and it lit the fire.

The newspaper reader says: this party will ruin itself if it makes errors like this. My higher politics says: a party which makes errors like this is already finished - it is no longer secure in its instincts.

I had this crazy job, though, when I first got to Los Angeles...I answered this ad in the back of the newspaper to be a telephone psychic, and I did that for two days. I called up this guy, and...this is how hard it was to get this job: He said, 'So, uh, do you feel intuitive from time to time?' And I was like, 'Yea, sure, I feel intuitive.' He said, 'Do you read Tarot cards?' And I said, 'I DO!' and I didn't.

I think it's only in a crisis that Americans see other people. It has to be an American crisis, of course. If two countries fight that do not supply the Americans with some precious commodity, then the education of the public does not take place. But when the dictator falls, when the oil is threatened, then you turn on the television and they tell you where the country is, what the language is, how to pronounce the names of the leaders, what the religion is all about, and maybe you can cut out recipes in the newspaper of Persian dishes.

Beautiful credit! The foundation of modern society. Who shall say that this is not the golden age of mutual trust, of unlimited reliance upon human promises? That is a peculiar condition of society which enables a whole nation to instantly recognize point and meaning in the familiar newspaper anecdote, which puts into the mouth of a distinguished speculator in lands and mines this remark: -- ''I wasn't worth a cent two years ago, and now I owe two millions of dollars.''

When I left the room he said to Ben Stiller, 'There goes the future Mrs. Apatow.' I guess he had some kind of plan worked out. He asked me out on a date, and I thought it was just a drink with a friend. But I remember looking at him and thinking, 'This is the type of guy I should be with, not those jerk-off guys who don't treat me right.' So I guess his little plan worked, and it's all history. Before meeting Judd, I was always into the scruffy guys, those dudes who work at the newspaper stand and smoke all day, guys who were no good and treated me badly. Then when I got the job on The Cable Guy, it was a real shock because I was suddenly surrounded by all these incredibly funny men. It just blew my mind. I wasn't used to that. The loser guys I'd been hanging out with weren't funny at all. And now I was working with Matthew Broderick, Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller and Judd. They were the funniest guys in the world. It was like a dream.
