After my grandfather's plane took enemy fire, he was denied permission to land at the first available airstrip. In that classic British bureaucratic way, they said he had to go back to your own airbase in the Midlands. They crashed between the coast and the airfield.

The thing that fascinates me is that the way I came to film and television is extinct. Then there were gatekeepers, it was prohibitively expensive to make a film, to be a director you had to be an entrepreneur to raise money.

I think we all have blocks between us and the best version of ourselves, whether it's shyness, insecurity, anxiety, whether it's a physical block, and the story of a person overcoming that block to their best self. It's truly inspiring because I think all of us are engaged in that every day.

I think I would say 'The King's Speech' is surprisingly funny, in fact the audiences in London, Toronto, LA, New York commented there's more laughter in this film than in most comedies, while it is also a moving tear-jerker with an uplifting ending.

With the coming of radio as a mass medium, suddenly the world changed. It became about, 'Can this leader project emotional connection through the way he speaks on the radio?' And the anxiety about whether he could do that, we've inherited.

1 - 2 - 3 To be a man's own fool is bad enough, but the vain man is everybody's. William Penn To be like Christ is to be a Christian. William Penn True godliness does not turn men out of the world, but enables them to live better in it and excites their endeavors to mend it. William Penn True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment. William Penn Truth often suffers more by the heat of its defenders than the arguments of its opposers. William Penn We are apt to love praise, but not deserve it. But if we would deserve it, we must love virtue more than that. William Penn 1 - 2 - 3

In 'The King's Speech,' patriotism is utterly contained within a historical moment, the third of September, 1939, where the aggressor is clear, the fight is clear, it hasn't become complicated over time.

Thousands of people come to LA every year, and some of them just disappear. Somebody gets them. In the States around 100,000 people vanish each year. I don't know what that means. Maybe there's something that just pulls 'em out.

What I learned about stammering was that, when as a young child you lose the confidence of anyone who wants to listen to you, you lose confidence in your voice and the right to speech. And a lot of the therapy was saying, 'You have a right to be heard.'

My dad said, 'The thing that I was told that was really helpful was that I mustn't be afraid of the things I was afraid of when I was five years old'. The shock of his childhood had put him in this defensive crouch against the world, and he needed to know that he had a nice wife and kids and it wasn't the same any more.

I am and always will be an HRH. But out of personal choice I like to be called William because that is my name and I want people to call me William - for now.

I wanted to make a human monster. His name is Coffin Baby. The idea is based on a group of people from Pasadena whose names I can't mention. His mother died and during the funeral, this baby came out of her in the coffin.

Ive never actually yet shot on digital, but I am a fan of digital cinema projection. So my favorite route is to capture on 35mm and to project digitally because of the consistency of this digital projection system and its faithfulness to the way I graded it is so impressive.

I have a ton of scripts sent to me. At the moment, Im frankly struggling to catch up. Im reading through all of the scripts. So I havent decided on what Im going to do next, but my first job is to catch up on the reading that Im behind on.

I think its here to stay. I cant say this for America, but in England, if you look at investment Murdoch has made on Sky Television to bring 3D TV into the mass marketplace. Thats a pipeline that is going to need feeding. With people making that kind of investment, I think its here to stay. I suppose, for me, good films create the illusion of 3D anyway.

From William of Orange to William Pitt the younger there was but one man without whom English history must have taken a different turn, and that was William Pitt the elder.

The relationship that Tony Blair has with Cherie Blair doesn't have an immediate binding effect on the body politic with Britain. But in the Elizabethan court, whoever was Elizabeth's lover rose to the most powerful political player in the court, became a multimillionaire, had the power to bestow land and status to other people.

My mum, in 2007, was invited by some Australian friends in London to a fringe theatre play reading of an unrehearsed, unproduced play called The King's Speech. Thank God she went, because she rung me up and said 'Tom, I think I've found your next film.' So with this tonight, I honour you, and the moral of the story is 'listen to your mother.'

I feel connected to the Second World War because my father lost his father in that war. So, through my dad and the effect it had on him of losing his father young, I always felt connected to the war. It goes back years, but it still feels to me as if we're completely living in it.

Yeah, but the problem remains that its hard to find great scripts and great material. The truth is that The Kings Speech, which is great material, people werent lining up to finance it. It was thanks to people like Harvey that it did get financed. Im not nave, theres maybe material that I want to do that is still hard to finance. So I think that it remains that whatever success you have, it doesnt necessarily mean your films can be financed easily.
