I sang for my family. And I think probably the first time I sang and got paid for it, I was about 6 or 7.

Use those talents you have. You will make it. You will give joy to the world. Take this tip from nature: The woods would be a very silent place if no birds sang except those who sang best.

I wanted to play rock and roll when I started playing. Nobody at that time ever thought about songwriting. You sang songs, that's all. You sang other people's songs. That's all there were.

But I was losing so much bone density that I would have been in grave danger. And I mean grave danger. If I had let it go just a few more years I could have broken my hip or spine just picking up my granddaughter.

I think of going to the grave without having a psychedelic experience like going to the grave without ever having s... It means that you never figured out what it is all about. The mystery is in the body and the way the body works itself into nature.

I knew that in order to make it in America, I had to be willing to start over. You have to take a step down to take a step up and not many singers are prepared to do that. It was a humbling experience. I sang anywhere and everywhere. Once there was a 'Bedingfield Barbeque', where someone won the chance to have me sing at their house. I didn't really know anything about it until I got to the winner's house and smelt the sausages cooking. There was no microphone, nothing. I just sang in this family's back yard.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die.

Of course, the way writers think about those things is almost certain to be affected by their own cultural background, and it would be hard to deny that, for whatever reasons, a lot of SF writers come from Anglo or European backgrounds.
