Gluttony is derived from the Latin word “gluttire”. Gluttire means to swallow. It means consumption of food, drinks and intoxicants in excess. Gluttony, according to Christian mythology, is considered one of the deadly sins. Someone who eats or drinks in excess may even eat or drink the share of the needy. Over-indulgence or over-consumption of any stuff is never good for health. In the words of Peter De Vries, “Gluttony is an emotional escape, a sign that something is eating us.”
Gluttony leads to obesity. People, who consume a lot of junk food especially, become overweight. People who indulge in drinking alcohol excessively have protruding bellies. In the words of Giraldus Cambrensis, “Not addicted to gluttony or drunkenness, this people who incur no expense in food or dress, and whose minds are always bent upon the defence of their country, and on the means of plunder, are wholly employed in the care of their horses and furniture.”
