Democracy is a form of government in which people have the say in choosing the government or leader of their choice. In other words, in a democracy, power lies in the hand of people unlike autocracy or dictatorship, where a single person usurps all the power and rules over the entire nation. Abraham Lincoln, the great US president, called democracy as a, “government of the people, for the people and by the people.” In the following lines, Lincoln expresses his idea of democracy. Quote verbatim, “As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.”
In a democracy, the leading government comprises of eminent and learned people, worthy of leading the nation and leading it towards progress. The government pledges to work for the people of the nation and their betterment too. This government is duly elected by the people of the nation. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “Democracy is worth dying for, because it is the most deeply honourable form of government ever devised by man.”
