Later, after flying in the Navy for four or five years, spending some time on an aircraft carrier, I applied to and was accepted in a program where I went to graduate school first and then to the Naval Test Pilots School.

Most of the people that I went to school with - I went to secondary school - we were educated to go and work in the line at Ford's, and if we were lucky, technical skilled labor. I sort of rejected that, and thought I wanted to do something else.

I was okay with school. My sister Kourtney was extremely smart. I always read a little slower. She was really mean to me. She would make me organize the bookshelf in our room. She would boss me around. I was like a B student. I didn't love school.

When I look back, there are various things I did that make me cringe. But then I'm sure that in my sixties I'll look back at how I am now and also cringe. I just think that's inevitable. What was weird about my childhood was that nobody else in my family was remotely like me. They were incredibly laid-back, but I was just like this ball of fire. I asked my mother about it recently: where did it all come from? And she said, 'I have no idea. We just sat back with our mouths open and watched you go.'

My high school was nothing like West Beverly High, let me tell you. I grew up in Fredericktown, Ohio. It was a small town. I didn't do that well in school, although I was voted "The Biggest Flirt." I played sports I was on the tennis team and also the baseball team. But the coolest thing I did was that I dressed up as our school mascot, Freddie Bird, for all of the football games. My step-father had a helicopter and I got the helicopter to drop me onto the football field. It was cool.

I only did theater in high school, and I loved it so much; yeah, I must tell you I loved being on stage. Oddly enough, I'm actually a little intimidated by it now because I know some really great stage actors who are so wonderful and it just freaks me out. But I'd love to eventually get back on stage.

In high school, there are so many cliques. You're never safe. In between my junior and senior years, I went away to film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and I came back ready to do the things with my friends that we always did, but things change. People get older, and there are some inside jokes that you don't know about that have happened. You feel lost for a while, and it's hard to come back from that. Then the friends who have 'replaced' you are territorial. I've experienced that a little bit. There are catty, insecure, and gossipy girls everywhere, but for me, I don't think it's a matter of any of them being genuinely bad at heart. I just think that maybe the different ways in which people are raised make them different and insecure. They point out the bad things in others just to make themselves feel better. It's everywhere.

I wouldn't call myself hot. I looked about 10 years old until the summer of my junior year [of high school]. I also used to go shopping at Goodwill. I would always come home with some ugly flannel that was too big for me, but I felt rebellious wearing it. My mom hated it. I look back now, and I think I just looked like an idiot.

I went to an all-girls pre school where everyone went off to Harvard or Yale, and I had zero interest in doing so. I think they thought I was on drugs. There was a neighboring all-boys school, so we'd get together and do dumb things. It was your typical Catholic-American upbringing.

It was very much like Norman Rockwell: small town America. We walked to school or rode our bikes, stopped at the penny candy store on the way home from school, skated on the pond.

For example, UNICEF works with governments to change legislation such as in India where a law was passed raising the age of compulsory school completion to keep children in school and away from the workplace for longer.

I've run a lot of miles over the years, some fast and some not so fast. I've won some big races and I've had some big disappointments, but I enjoy the freedom of running and the challenge of training and competition as much now as when I first started back in high school.

If we go to school to learn, and knowledge is power and power is corrupt and corruption is crime and crime doesn't pay then why the hell do we go to school?

Public school is a place of detention for children placed in the care of teachers who are afraid of the principal, principals who are afraid of the school board, school boards who are afraid of the parents, parents who are afraid of the children, and children who are afraid of nobody.
