I wrote those poems for myself, as a way of being a soldier here in this country. I didn't know the poems would travel. I didn't go to Lebanon until two years ago, but people told me that many Arabs had memorized these poems and translated them into Arabic.

I love chapbooks. They're in some ways the ideal form in which to publish and read poems. You can read 19 poems in a way you can't sit down and read 60 to 70 pages of poems.

On the other hand, I don't understand the enthusiasm for everything in the antique shop that Grandma threw out. There, the sense of quality has declined; otherwise Grandma wouldn't have thrown it out.

Every year my grandma would take me to Disneyland. It was a special time for just the two of us and no one else. I think I was about 3 when I first went and continued until I was maybe 12. It was our day and I especially remember the 'Electric Parade.' It was so much fun and my grandma has always been very special in my life.

That how it starts, you know. Takin' bi...es out to eat. Meals, and whatnot. Next thing you know, you wake up in a rest haven for ho... A sanctuary for scandalous skeezes and stunt. What if he marries her?! What if we end up with a ho for a grandma?! What if we have a ho for a Grandma and she comes to school on Career Day?! Ooh - what if they have kids?! We have a brother, a sister that's half-ho!

Well it is certainly the case that the poems - which were in fact published during Shakespeare's lifetime - are weird if they began or originated in this form, as I think they did, because the poems get out of control.

My earlier poems were sadder than my poems are today, perhaps because I wrote them in confusion or when I was unhappy. But I am not a melancholy person, quite the contrary, no one enjoys laughing more than I do.

However, I began to submit poems to British magazines, and some were accepted. It was a great moment to see my first poems published. It felt like entering a tradition.

My poems were just kind of all over the place. They had no focus, no location, nothing. Kind of a series of images that could have been set anywhere. A lot of the poems were just exercises for myself.

I want to write poems which are very emotional, but I would have some hesitation in saying I want to write poems which are sentimental.

I play with language a great deal in my poems, and I enjoy that. I try to condense language, that is, I try to express complicated but I hope real emotions as simply as possible. But that doesn't mean the poems are simple, just that they are as truthful as I can make them.
