Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents, and then later on in our life when we are oppressed by sickness and become old, we are again dependent on the kindness of others. Since at the beginning and end of our lives we are so dependent on other's kindness, how can it be in the middle that we would neglect kindness towards others?

One can't write without having read - you have to read before beginning to write - and universities offer a very good opportunity to read.

I don't read anything anymore. I don't have the eyesight. I read my own copy, that's all. I think I've read everything that's worth reading.

It's amazing how coke encompasses everything in your life. Addicts cannot confront life because they only think of their next hit. I ruined life for my parents, my sister and all my friends.

My nervous breakdown last season, when I was bemoaning the fact that I'll never have time to read all the great books I wanted to read. I was having a freak out. And Charlie said 'Well, if you put a few by the toilet and read one every couple of weeks you'll knock a bunch off.' And I said, 'There's not enough bowel movements left.'

If I'm with my friends, and they'll be like, 'Oh, hey, where's your dad? Let's go say hi.' And I'll be like, 'Oh, no. He's watching hours and hours of TED Talks just...Dude, don't go in there.' Last time I went in there, he said, 'Jaden, so the art of telling stories is an art that you really have to learn. I want you to read Aesop's Fables.' 'Dad, I've read Aesop's Fables three times.' 'Honestly, you can't read it enough.' But when you're on your way to see a 9:15 movie and it's nine o'clock, he's like, 'Wait, wait, Jaden, I need to tell you something about life, man.'

Parents lend children their experience and a vicarious memory; children endow their parents with a vicarious immortality.

I love chapbooks. They're in some ways the ideal form in which to publish and read poems. You can read 19 poems in a way you can't sit down and read 60 to 70 pages of poems.

I lived in a plenty tough neighborhood. When somebody called me a 'dirty little Guinea', there was only one thing to do-break his head. When I got older, I realized that you shouldn't do it that way. I realized that you've got to do it through education. Children are not to blame. It is the parents. How can a child know whether his playmate is an Italian, a Jew or Irish, unless the parents have discussed it in the privacy of their homes.

Parents quotes
If you as parents cut corners, your children will too. If you lie, they will too. If you spend all your money on yourselves and tithe no portion of it for charities, colleges, churches, synagogues, and civic causes, your children won't either. And if parents snicker at racial and gender jokes, another generation will pass on the poison adults still have not had the courage to snuff out.

I used to always read my stuff. And I could never understand why artists would say, 'Oh, I can't read my older stuff.' I'd go, 'Are you crazy? I could read my stuff forever!' Now it's a little harder.

My friend and I used to put on puppet shows for our parents. I loved the whole process of it, I didn't know what I was doing, I just knew that I liked it. Luckily my parents saw that and put me in classes at Webster University's theater for kids when I was around six. After that, I was done. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I suppose I just needed the attention so badly that I was like 'This is great! This is more attention than I could ever need right here!'

How can children credit the assertions of parents, which their own eyes show them to be false? Few parents act in such a manner as much to enforce their maxims by the credit of their lives

From the moment of birth, when the stone-age baby confronts the twentieth-century mother, the baby is subjected to these forces of violence, called love, as its mother and father have been, and their parents and their parents before them. These forces are mainly concerned with destroying most of its potentialities. This enterprise is on the whole successful.

To read well, that is, to read true books in a true spirit, is a noble exercise, and one that will task the reader more than any other exercise which the customs of the day esteem. It requires a training such as the athletes underwent, the steady intention almost of the whole life to this object.

My parents were really strict when I was growing up. When we all went to the theatre to see the first Scary Movie I warned my momma when I told her to get up and go and buy popcorn, she had to go and buy popcorn. But I'd like to think that I'd broken my parents in early. At least because I could have been part of a raunchier movie so that when I go on to play a crack whor.. that's naked all the time my parents won't be so upset.
