Every time I've done comedy in, like, traditional comedy clubs, there's always these comedians that do really well with audiences but that the other comedians hate because they're just, you know, doing kind of cheap stuff like dancing around or doing, like, very kind of base s.. humor a lot, and stuff like that.

Comedy is so subjective. You could be in a room with 400 people laughing at a joke and you could just not think it's funny. You're just sitting there like, 'Am I in the twilight zone? Why is everyone laughing?' It's such a personal thing. People have such a personal visceral response to comedy.

Comedy is very controlling - you are making people laugh. It is there in the phrase 'making people laugh.' You feel completely in control when you hear a wave of laughter coming back at you that you have caused.

I'll be honest with you. Comedy is what I want to see at the movies these days. Life is frickin' hard, man! When I go to the movies, I want to see people smiling, enjoying themselves, and having some fun. I've made other kinds of movies, for sure, but it's pretty apparent to me that [comedy] is what people want. I enjoy those kinds of movies.

Why isn't my life like a situation comedy? Why don't I have a bunch of friends with nothing better to do but drop by and instigate wacky adventures? Why aren't my conversations peppered with spontaneous witticisms? Why don't my friends demonstrate heartfelt concern for my well being when I have problems? ...I gotta get my life some writers.

I'll probably stick to comedy for the time being. I mean, a great piece of work is a great piece of work, and I'm up for good work anytime. But I do love comedy!

It's hard enough to write a good drama, it's much harder to write a good comedy, and it's hardest of all to write a drama with comedy. Which is what life is.

Even the shows or movies that we know are not going to change the world, I love this. I love 'em. I'm a movie fan. I'm a nerd of any kind. I love a big studio comedy as much as I love the teeniest tiniest of indie. I'm not a snob in that way. I really do like a big, big studio comedy.

There's such a boy's club with comedy in Hollywood and that's what Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell do-they develop their own comedies. I would really love to be a part of that as well. I did get a little tired of feeling like I'm waiting around for somebody to cast me in their comedy. That would happen, at times, but usually they'd be more of the straight-girl roles that aren't nearly as much fun to play. So, it was necessary for me to take some kind of initiative with my own career. I feel very fortunate with this one. I certainly wasn't very powerful, necessarily, in the whole process, but I feel like if I did it once, then I can do it again.

Comedy is really what I enjoy the most. And it's what I find hardest. Finding the comedy in a situation is always the hardest thing, and I think as an actor you should always try and find the hardest thing.

I suddenly realized that comedy, for me, was just being honest, and playing it for real. I've seen so many wonderful actors who turn into creatures from another planet when they're told they are supposed to be playing comedy. I... was not too happy to suddenly take on this public role thrust upon me. They just assumed I was the Joan of Arc of the women's movement. And I wasn't at all. It put a lot of unnecessary pressure on me. I'd never even been to Wrigley Field. I never even enjoyed baseball that much, but I loved being there, the crowd was lovely, and they all sang with me!

The difference between tragedy and comedy: Tragedy is something awful happening to somebody else, while comedy is something awful happening to somebody else.

I definitely feel like Ive learned a lot about comedy working on this show. Id never really done comedy before Community, so getting to work day in and day out with all these great people, directors, writers, and actors, I feel like Ive learned a lot. I dont know if I feel more confident, but it feels more familiar, and thats really nice.

What's great about comedy, obviously, is that you set up a situation that people assume one thing and then you break the assumption. That's basically the backbone to comedy. You set up a situation, let people make an assumption, and then you break the assumption.

Maybe American Pie was the closest thing I've had, because it led to some more comedy jobs. It gave me more comedy cred, because everyone saw that movie. It was an incredibly successful series of movies. I just happened to, you know, stumble into that movie, really. And Harold and Kumar probably wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that movie. Because the writers saw me and started following me career, and had me mind when they wrote it. I really do feel like I'm one of the few people Hollywood where... it really has been a ladder for me, rung by rung. As close as you get in L.A. to climbing a ladder steadily.
