I found the researching academic's life was really lonely. It drove me crazy, also because I fell in love and married a more social person. I thought about it long and hard, and realized that the time I spent onstage was when I was really more myself and at ease. So, late in the game, I went to the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver, Colo.

For the theatre one needs long arms; it is better to have them too long than too short. An artiste with short arms can never, never make a fine gesture.

This film business, perhaps more so in America than in Europe, has always been about young s..uality. It's not true of theatre, but in America, film audiences are young. It's not an intellectual cinema in America.

My mum, in 2007, was invited by some Australian friends in London to a fringe theatre play reading of an unrehearsed, unproduced play called The King's Speech. Thank God she went, because she rung me up and said 'Tom, I think I've found your next film.' So with this tonight, I honour you, and the moral of the story is 'listen to your mother.'

I look at myself and say, 'I can't believe my head's that big. Thank God my hair doesn't look like a bird's nest.' I am critical of myself like everyone else. You go to a movie theatre and you are forty feet high. I had bad skin as a teenager and I am a shy person, but I think I am in the perfect business to fight my insecurities. You have to learn to love yourself and say, 'I am pretty cool' instead of being so critical. You can easily fall into the trap of doing that.

I've done both theatre and film and the fact is if you start believing, if you start reading things and they're good reviews - you believe that and you're lost, and then you read bad reviews and you think that's true and you read that and you're lost.

A talented trumpeter who toots his own horn winds up playing to an empty theatre. A talented trumpeter who lets others recognize his talent winds up a legend.

I was interested in opera and it seemed to me that the only possible theatre for contemporary opera would be television. So I started working towards a kind of television kind of opera.

I would study film. I was accepted into USC as well as the film school, because that's two separate processes. But I wouldn't study theatre. I've never taken any acting classes. I don't believe anyone has a right to tell me how to be an actress other than my director, so I've never responded to that. I would study the history of film, I'd study producing and directing and just the beauty of film.

Well never ever be as good on record as we are live because were not a full band unless those kids are there. We ride the ripples of that emotional tide like at a movie theatre. If theres any artistry to what I do, any gift that I have, its that somehow Ive been able to tap into that. People have told me that I guide it. I dont think so I think I ride itThats what Ill miss most when its all over. But maybe Ill just go to more movies.

My mother wanted me to be a lawyer and I wanted to be an Actor. So I went to school, majored in theatre, and said 'Mom, I have to choose my own destiny. I want to be an actor.' A couple of weeks after I graduated college I called my mother up and said 'Can I borrow $200?' and she said 'Why don't you act like you've got $200.'

A good drama critic is one who perceives what is happening in the theatre of his time. A great drama critic also perceives what is not happening.

My parents were really strict when I was growing up. When we all went to the theatre to see the first Scary Movie I warned my momma when I told her to get up and go and buy popcorn, she had to go and buy popcorn. But I'd like to think that I'd broken my parents in early. At least because I could have been part of a raunchier movie so that when I go on to play a crack whor.. that's naked all the time my parents won't be so upset.

The great difference between screen acting and theatre acting is that screen acting is about reacting - 75% of the time, great screen actors are great reactors.

I've thought about doing theatre again for some time. My last stage play was back in 1999, when I was with Colin Firth in Richard Greenberg's play Three Days of Rain, which was part of the Donmar Warehouse's American Imports season. Since then, I turned offers down for personal reasons rather than play reasons. I also have three kids and these things would come along during the summer when we wanted to get away from London on holiday as a family. But it's mainly because I'm a big Neil LaBute fan.

I was at a loose end, and someone suggested that it would be something that I should take a look at, and pretty much offered me free acting classes. On a whim, I was so like "this might be cool", I was skeptical at first. I don't really see myself doing community theatre, so I really don't know why I would take acting classes, you know what I mean? I was 20, and it just sort of jumped in my lap, I just ran into someone who knew an acting teacher and he referred me to classes. It was suggested to me that I had potential and if I were to pursue it, then I could probably be successful. I had nothing else going on in my life whatsoever at that point; I was a roofer, I was a cab driver. I was doing nothing, right, so I just completely pursued it. I just moved to Vancouver to pursue it.
