All of this is very nice, but I'm mainly focused on being a mom. I have a little book that I wrote in the fourth grade that said, 'I want to be an actress when I grow up, but I'll probably be a bus driver. I love my bus driver.' It's funny the way things play out.

As an actor, you're sort of the court-appointed lawyer of the character. And that's what used to draw me to scripts...something in a woman that I wanted to defend, something that I recognized or wanted to understand, something that turned my head. Now that I'm a mother, I think it's more the message of a film, or the questions that they pose about life...that's the magnifying glass through which I look at them now. But at first it was all about the character.

In sixth grade, my basketball team made it to the league championships. In double overtime, with three seconds left, I rebounded the ball and passed it - to the wrong team! They scored at the buzzer and we lost the game. To this day, I still have nightmares!

My advice was to approach it the same way you approach anything else; don't get swept up in the size and scale of it all. You still want to be true to the story, your character and that's your job. It doesn't matter the budget. We bounce ideas around all the time about scripts and things; he's got his head on his shoulders, he's a level-headed guy and very talented. He'll have a great time.

In the book, I write about children in first grade who were taught to read by reading want ads. They learned to write by writing job applications. Imagine what would happen if anyone tried to do that to children in a predominantly white suburban school.

My first job was in sixth grade, sweeping the clay tennis courts at the yacht club near my house, which I was not a member of. Always had to pay my own rent. But I don't really have any concept of how money works. I don't know how much things cost. Like a BMW. Or a quart of milk. It's embarrassing.

People who exercise their embryonic freedom day after day, little by little, expand that freedom. People who do not will find that it withers until they are literally ''being lived'.' They are acting out scripts written by parents, associates and society.

If I could have written a show for myself, this would have been it. I really enjoy going to work. In New York, I was spoiled by working with so many amazing New York writers, and I really thought they were just artists. I felt like in L.A., people are trying to crank out scripts by Friday. But I really love the words that these guys on Glee use. I don't feel like I'm selling my soul out. It's very special. Ryan Murphy has really kind of created this world that he wants.

I hated the lost colony; in second grade, we were doing American History, and they said, We don't know what happened to them. That drove me nuts. That lost colony drove me crazy.

When you're an actor in grade school, high school, college, whatever, you start to realize what you're really good at, what you're kinda good at, what you're okay at, and you start to compartmentalize. But if you know yourself and what you're capable of, it's just a matter of opportunity.

I don't like to give the sob story: growing up in a single-parent home, never knew my father, my mother never worked, and when friends came over, I'd hide the welfare cheese. Yo, I failed ninth grade three times, but I don't think it was necessarily 'cause I'm stupid. I didn't go to school. I couldn't deal.

In grade school I was smart, but I didn't have any friends. In high school, I quit being smart and started having friends.

I was not good in school. I couldn't ever read very fast or very well. I got tested for learning disabilities, for dyslexia. Then I got put on Ritalin and Dexedrine. I took those starting in the eighth grade. As soon as they pumped that drug into me, it would focus me right in. I was doing great. I was getting As, doing extra-credit work!
