Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays, good company, good conversation -- what are they? They are the happiest people in the world.

Books, books, books had found the secret of a garret-room piled high with cases in my father's name; Piled high, packed large, where, creeping in and out among the giant fossils of my past, like some small nimble mouse between the ribs of a mastodon, I nibbled here and there at this or that box, pulling through the gap, in heats of terror, haste, victorious joy, the first book first. And how I felt it beat under my pillow, in the morning's dark. An hour before the sun would let me read! My books

The happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts. Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good company, good conversation, are the happiest people in the world. And they are not only happy in themselves, they are the cause of happiness in others.

That business we started with 10 people has now grown into a great American success story. Some of the companies we helped start are names you know. An office supply company called Staples where Im pleased to see the Obama campaign has been shopping; The Sports Authority, which became a favorite of my sons. We started an early childhood learning center called Bright Horizons that First Lady Michelle Obama rightly praised. At a time when nobody thought wed ever see a new steel mill built in America, we took a chance and built one in a cornfield in Indiana. Today Steel Dynamics is one of the largest steel producers in the United States.

My boyfriend wasnt in the industry by any meanseverything was very new to him. He kind of felt violated by a lot of people trying to always be in our business. Small things. Wed go out for a regular dinner and then want to go see a movie and Id be there signing autographs and taking pictures for 15 minutes and, for him, it got a little frustrating at times. He wasnt as understanding as I thought hed be. Then thered be guys who fans and he didnt know how to handle them and was always feeling disrespected instead of not taking it personally. In that aspect, it kind of made it hard because he didnt understand a lot of things that were going on. He didnt understand a lot of the ways that I had to go about handling things. It didnt work out and that was a lot of the reason why.

I never wanted to do acting or anything. But I tell you, my friend and I, his name is Derrick Carr, a guy I was playing football with on the Rams. He and I wrote a script and we put our money together and made a movie out in Detroit in the off-season. It was called Young Boys Incorporated, all about this gang that ran Detroit for a long time. The big thing about them was that theyd get young kids. Because then if the kids were picked up theyd go to juvie, when they were eighteen theyd be released and their slate would be wiped clean and theyd start all over again. So we made that movie. It was terrible. We put all our money together. I was hooked. I had just finished my first season with the Redskins. Wed get kicked out of locations. I loved it. I knew thats what I wanted to do.

Too many women have too much leisure time for their own good. They have time for criticism, gossip, faultfinding, and complaining. They have time for idle games and lay too much attention to things of the flesh. There are other women who have too little time for the enduring things of life. They are too busy flitting about doing this and that. They have great activity and much doing, but they lack time for building Christian characters. Both kinds of women...the too-idle and the too-busy need to take time for meditation and quiet repose in prayer to God. They need time to cultivate their souls that in turn they may cultivate their childrens lives.

By Labor the North has subdued Nature, changed a parsimonious soil to fertility, built dwellings for almost her whole population, raised the school-house, established the Church, encircled the globe with her ships, and made her books and her papers to be as blades of grass and as leave of the Summer for number. But in the South, labor, a badge of shame, is the father of misery. The slave labors, but with no cheerit is not the road to respectability, it will honor him with no citizens trust, it brings no bread to his family, no grain to his garner, no leisure in after-days, no books or papers to his children. It opens no school-house door, builds no church, rears for him no factory, lays no keel, fills no bank, earns no acres. With sweat and toil and ignorance he consumes his life, to pour the earnings into channels from which he does no drink, into hands that never honor him. But perpetually rob and often torment.
