In the book, I write about children in first grade who were taught to read by reading want ads. They learned to write by writing job applications. Imagine what would happen if anyone tried to do that to children in a predominantly white suburban school.

My first job was in sixth grade, sweeping the clay tennis courts at the yacht club near my house, which I was not a member of. Always had to pay my own rent. But I don't really have any concept of how money works. I don't know how much things cost. Like a BMW. Or a quart of milk. It's embarrassing.

I hated the lost colony; in second grade, we were doing American History, and they said, We don't know what happened to them. That drove me nuts. That lost colony drove me crazy.

When you're an actor in grade school, high school, college, whatever, you start to realize what you're really good at, what you're kinda good at, what you're okay at, and you start to compartmentalize. But if you know yourself and what you're capable of, it's just a matter of opportunity.

I don't like to give the sob story: growing up in a single-parent home, never knew my father, my mother never worked, and when friends came over, I'd hide the welfare cheese. Yo, I failed ninth grade three times, but I don't think it was necessarily 'cause I'm stupid. I didn't go to school. I couldn't deal

In grade school I was smart, but I didn't have any friends. In high school, I quit being smart and started having friends.

I was not good in school. I couldn't ever read very fast or very well. I got tested for learning disabilities, for dyslexia. Then I got put on Ritalin and Dexedrine. I took those starting in the eighth grade. As soon as they pumped that drug into me, it would focus me right in. I was doing great. I was getting As, doing extra-credit work!

Life is an error-making and an error-correcting process, and nature in marking man's papers will grade him for wisdom as measured both by survival and by the quality of life of those who survive.

I didn't go to high school, and I didn't go to grade school either. Education, I think, is for refinement and is probably a liability.

I was actually born in Canandaigua. It's one of the Finger Lakes. My dad owned the marina on the lake, and we lived there until I was about three. Then we moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where we lived until I was in eighth grade-that's when my brother and I moved to Rochester with my mom so I could go to the same private school she and her siblings had gone to. I'd been getting into trouble in Lancaster.

I started to teach social science for the sixth grade. I wasn't a teacher, but I had enough college lessons. I was a temporary teacher for somebody who had a crack-up. When I went to that school I already was the fourth teacher. No school on TV is like that one. That was really funny. The teachers, after all, had nervous breakdowns because of the Sixth-graders.

I was kind of quiet. I grew up in a neighborhood that was mostly girls and old people. There weren't any boys my age, so I spent a lot of time by myself, imagining things. And every time we would get established somewhere, we would move. Life just started to get good in seventh grade, and then we moved to Chicago. I ended up in a really big high school, and I didn't know anybody. But then The Beatles came along.

Too often we act - ask our schools to be truant officers, our teachers to be truant officers, because we're giving them children who have, you know, they're not ready to learn. And if they're not ready to learn by the third grade, they know they're behind.
