A promise is a commitment by someone to do or not to do something. Both an affirmation and oath can be a promise. One special kind of promise is a vow. Promises must be kept and should be fulfilled. Broken promises hurt the most. Promises are a manifestation of human intentions to act or refrain from acting in a specified way. The person manifesting the intention is the promise, or one who makes a promise. A notable type of promise is an election promise. Promise is something that arouses hope, expectation and assurance in the minds of the person to whom the promise is made. In the words of Julian Bond, “As skills and energy became more of a demand, people who didn't have skills just got left behind, got shuttled to the side. Education didn't keep up with their promise. Education didn't prepare them for this new world. Jobs went overseas.”
