You can relax more when you're playing a silly character than when you're playing a really rigid character. But to be fair, I think George Clooney is a bigger teenager than any of the 'Twilight' cast. He's the guy throwing a football at your head and then hiding around the corner, pretending it wasn't him!

I think the hardest part about being a teenager is dealing with other teenagers - the criticism and the ridicule, the gossip and rumors.

My dad came from Cuba when he was a teenager not speaking English. And I grew up here speaking Spanglish. That's the world in which I grew up, and that's a world in which a lot of second generation immigrants find themselves.

It was always my decision at a younger age that I never wanted to go through my teen life as a normal teenager, and finish high school, and go to proms and stuff. It felt natural to me. It's not so much about being in the music 'bizz'. It's more about doing music and knowing that your lifetime is such a small thing and to waste it doing anything else you don't like is just shooting yourself in the foot.

It hurts to be a teenager, to watch the person you like walk in and out of your life and you just want to kiss them everytime you see them but you know they dont feel the same. There is lots of phyiscal pain out there but nothing hurts more than rejection.

I thought he was an interesting central figure, central character, one who is definitely not your typical central character figure in a film, who's easy to like. He's not easy to like. It forces you to involve yourself with what's going on.

I was obsessed with a writer called Martin Amis when I was a teenager. I read everything. Every single time I went to a bookshop, Id see if he has other books. I used to buy multiple editions of his books. Martin, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, they were my people when I was growing up. Id obsessively collect all their stuff.

I don't really have a favorite bass player. I listen to a lot of bluegrass. But then again, I'm not a typical bluegrass bass player. I was really into the Grateful Dead, and I still am - I don't listen to them too much, but for me they are a big influence.

We are all freaks. Yes! Alone in our rooms at night, we are all weirdoes and outcasts and losers. That is what being a teenager is all about! Whether you admit it or not, you are all worried that the others wont accept you, that if they knew the real you, they would recoil in horror. Each of us carries with us a secret shame that we think is somehow uniqueAnd if we are, each of us, freaks, then cant we accept whats different in each other and move on?

It was 2007. I had been on a Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, and after we wrapped shooting, I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that. Then I found out I was pregnant. I was 16. I'd had one boyfriend. It doesn't make it perfect or all right. But I was judged for something that probably most everyone does. I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision.

I look at myself and say, 'I can't believe my head's that big. Thank God my hair doesn't look like a bird's nest.' I am critical of myself like everyone else. You go to a movie theatre and you are forty feet high. I had bad skin as a teenager and I am a shy person, but I think I am in the perfect business to fight my insecurities. You have to learn to love yourself and say, 'I am pretty cool' instead of being so critical. You can easily fall into the trap of doing that.

So let's say you realize that you are never going to be a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. person. You're not cut out for that sort of typical work environment. The benefit might be that if you embrace that and say I need to be self-employed or I need to be doing more project-oriented work. Identify the benefits -- I'd be more productive. I'd be happier. The people around me would be happier because my mood would be better. When you identify the benefits of accepting the behavior or habit, you actually give leverage to it and give yourself a better chance of sticking with it.

Better Than You quotes
I don't feel I was ever a 'famous' child actor. I was just a working actor who happened to be a kid. I was never really in a hit show until I was a teenager with West Wing playing First Daughter Zoey Bartlet. In a way, that was my saving grace - not being a star on a hit show. It kept me working and kept me grounded.

I've been walked on, used and forgotten and I don't regret one moment of it because in those moments, I've learned a lot. I've learned who I can trust and can't. I've learned the meaning of friendship. I've learned how to tell when people are lying and when they're sincere. I've learned how to be a teenager, and how to grow up when I need to. I've been to hell and back a few times, and I won't ever take what I have for granted. This is life, live it one day at a time. You never know how many days you've got left.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was on vacation. But I really like Edinburgh. I went there when I was a teenager. I went during the Fringe festival and I've wanted to go back ever since. It was nice to be in a place where it felt like there was some history. I'm from Maine, and even Maine isn't that old. And certainly California is like the fetus of the world. It was nice to be in a place where it felt like things had really happened here and there was a real sense of history.

My freshman year at Columbia was the longest break I'd had from acting since I was six years old. When I was a teenager I loved acting, but I really just loved it for myself. I didn't like the fact that anyone else saw the work I was doing. When I moved to New York, I started to realize that I wanted people to see the stuff that I was doing, and I wanted it to mean something to them. A lot of people have told me 'Mysterious Skin' meant something to them. And that meant the world to me.

Usually I come in and sit down at roundtables in America and they look at me like 'what is wrong with you?' Just because I don't fit...nobody fits into the frame that typical Hollywood young actresses do, but they try to. They try to be this thing. Try to memorize answers and make everybody happy. That's so horrifying and scary to me. So when you're not that, you get criticized for it. You get criticized for being honest and criticized for being nervous. So that's kind of annoying. I do a whole day of press and then I get calls from publicity people that are like, 'you might want to be a little bit more bubbly'. And I'm like, 'no'. People get very upset in the States. It's weird. Fans of the book especially. They don't understand me. Which is fine. I guess it doesn't really matter who I am, it just matters that they like the movie.

I was innocent, you where a player, I fell for you, you enjoyed messing with me, at first I thought it was me in the wrong but it was you, slowly I changed, now your saying I'm not the same girl you fell in love with, please you where never in love with my, yeah I've changed because you made me change, I'm not as innocent, naive, stupid and weak as I used to be, I don't need you anymore, I don't want you anymore, I guess I'm your typical bi....

I've always applied the same attitude to things, an impulsive, instinctive reaction. It's hard to describe, but I often get a sense of absolute certainty - like, 'Yeah, that's the thing I really would want to do'. Maybe this is the part of me that's not very business savvy, but I never think, 'Oh, this or that will be good for me'. Only afterward will it dawn on me, where I say, 'Oh, this is good because I haven't played an everyday American woman as I do in Little Children, or a modern Englishwoman as I do in The Holiday'. It's only after I've finished it that I realize something worked out. Which is very typical of me in life. I've never been a good planner. I can plan my life and kids and everything, but in terms of work, I've never been good at it. I like the flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants thing. Life is more interesting then.

What causes adolescents to rebel is not the assertion of authority but the arbitrary use of power, with little explanation of the rules and no involvement in decision-making... Involving the adolescent in decisions doesn't mean that you are giving up your authority. It means acknowledging that the teenager is growing up and has the right to participate in decisions that affect his or her life.
