The generation which lived through the Second World War is disappearing. Post-war generations see Europe's great achievements - liberty, peace and prosperity - as a given.

All the papers contained nothing but fantastic stories about the war. However, for several months we had been accustomed to war talk. We had so often packed our service trunks that the whole thing had become tedious.

We can no longer apply the classic criteria to clearly determine whether and when we should use military force. We are waging war in Afghanistan, for example, but it's an asymmetrical war where the enemies are criminals instead of soldiers.

Music is something all people could relate to. It can make you feel sad, happy, or excited. Music is really people telling people about their feelings.

And in an era where radio stations that are inclined to play Styx music are your classic rock stations and the stations that play current music look at us as dinosaurs - the only way we could reach people with our new music, generally, is to perform live.

One of the most important things is to learn to read music. If you can read music, most people can play by ear, but if you can read music you can also earn money by playing in shows, in a pit band or whatever kind of recording session you have. They have a chart in front of you and you can read it. You won't be one dimensional.

I got to where I couldn't listen to country radio. Country music is supposed to have steel and fiddle. When I hear country music, it should be country.

It's a dream come true, and with this music, with this Rossini, it's unbelievable how to express the joy and express the joy of the situation and the joy to play this music, to sing this music, it's really fantastic.

If you run an Internet search on Vietnam and the war, most of the information you get begins at about 1962. I think this is telling. It is missing the whole period that led up to the reasons the war happened in the first place.

The Establishment center... has led us into the stupidest and cruelest war in all history. That war is a moral and political disaster - a terrible cancer eating away at the soul of our nation.

From the happy expression on their faces you might have supposed that they welcomed the war. I have met with men who loved stamps, and stones, and snakes, but I could not imagine any man loving war.

What I was trying to convey there was the kind of waste land that was left after the war. It was a bit like one always thinks of war, you know, stark scenery and no birds, no trees, no leaves, nothing living. And just emptiness.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.

This war differs from other wars, in this particular. We are not fighting armies but a hostile people, and must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war.

Went out for a walk to clear my head. Been listening to a lot of Aerosmith, Danny Gokey, John Mayer... I feel so inspired. I want to make music again. It sounds stupid I know. But it's a feeling I've not felt in a very long time. Sure I've made music, but that passion hasn't been there. I've made music because it's what I do. Because I had to. I WANT to make music. I want to pour my heart onto paper and write something that could change the world, change people's lives.... On a separate note, withdrawals and comedowns are going to be the death of me. But I'm doing okay I guess, ups and down.

No one would be foolish enough to choose war over peace--in peace sons bury their fathers, but in war fathers bury their sons.

I can definitely say that music is taking a turn [toward] the electro, somewhat 80s-inspired music. I feel like its kind of evolving back to that, and music kind of repeats itselflike, at one point in time hip-hop was dominating, and we had that moment, at one point in time R&B songs that were really melodic were dominating. Were at a point where the records that have an extra sprinkle of pop in them, or the more electro sound are starting to become more [prevalent], and are starting to be consistent throughout the music at radio.

In a way, if and individual assumes the risk of placing himself in the middle of a war to communicate to the rest of the world what's happening, he's trying to negotiate for peace. Perhaps that's the reason for those in charge of perpetuating the war do not like to have photographers around.

There is a peculiar burning odor in the room, like explosives. the kitchen fills with smoke and the hot, sweet, ashy smell of scorched cookies. The war has begun.

Revisiting the Revolutionary War is a bracing reminder that the fate of a continent, and the shape of the modern world, turned on the free choices of remarkably few Americans defying an empire
