Pity is the sympathy shown towards someone. It is a good habit to pity someone who deserves it; showering pity for those who don’t deserve is disastrous. Only those who have felt the pain and sorrow can show pity on others. Dean Koontz rightly says “the recognition of pain and fear in others give rise in us to pity, and in our pity is our humanity, our redemption”. If pity were absent, the basis of human morality would crumble down to pieces. But there is a limit to the amount of pity that can be shown to the deserving because Nietzsche said “pity makes suffering contagious”. One who is on the receiving side of pity, tends to long for more and more of it and even goes to the extent of enjoying his sufferings just for the sake of receiving pity from others. So, exercise caution while showing pity. Read these collections of quotes on pity.
