The moment you raised your sword, I felt that deep, innate loathing ignite within my core¦the unreserved resentment of human nature. You were the very embodiment of the loathing that dwells deep inside us. But I have to admit, we were once very much like you

There are many people weve seen lost in this business because other people havent stopped to make sure theyre OK, you know? People are aware when others are breaking, but in this town they dont tend to stop and help them. In the end, it costs a life. Part of the sadness in this business is that there are a lot of people in it looking for approval and love. Im lucky because I was raised with so much love that I can take a lot of knocks and not take anything personally.

When I was real little my parents raised me on classic rock, so The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton were what I got started on. Bob Marley too, my parents were always bumpin reggae and to this day I still listen to a lot of reggae. I started listening to rap in like 4th grade... probably would have started sooner but I didn't have a cool older brother or sister like a lot of other kids.

I still live in Kentucky. I was born and raised in Kentucky, and I still live there. I think that's the best thing for me...to kind of keep a level head. When I go back home, I have a completely normal life. I have my friends, I'm on a basketball team, I go to the mall, and we just do normal kid things. It's kind of nice to kind of escape the whole movie world and just become a normal kid again.

I was raised in the Jewish tradition, taught never to marry a Gentile woman, shave on a Saturday night and, most especially, never to shave a Gentile woman on a Saturday night.

My parents moved to Los Angeles when I was really young, but I spent every summer with my grandparents, and I'd stay with my grandfather on the farm in Longview. He was retired from the railroad, and he had a small farm with some cows and some pigs. I remember part of my youth was feeding hogs and plowing fields and stuff, so that's apart of me. And my parents raised me to say 'sir' and 'ma'am,' to open doors, things like that. That's the way I was brought up. Also, unfortunately, I was taught not to question too much. I didn't really question my mom and dad. That's usually what they told me to do.

I feel like Im so grateful for my life. I really love my family and I feel their blood in my veins. But I grew up in a very un-posh environment with a struggling single mother. We were both paying the rent together. It was a tough circumstance, but I think that gave me a sense of gratitude. I worked as a waitress so Im a crazy tipper, I respect people that work. I work myself really hard and I think to be raised in a working class environment was very helpful. As extraordinary and fancy and decadent as the Barrymores are I did not grow up in that kind of environment.

Remember that the task of a single mom is not a joke. It is very difficult for children to be raised by both parent. How much more a single mother? You have to be ready for this great task and never try to unleash your frustration on your children.

You have been called to Pentecost and to prepare for it this year. I bid you gather in our groups to recite the powerful mantras of the Spirit of the Resurrection and the resurrection flame to increase and increase and increase the Light, forming a magnet in the aura to draw to you even the greatest that the Great Law can allow you of that dispensation of the Holy Spirit: it is the love of the Spirit of God raised up in you, permeating every pore of your being, exuding joy to all life! This is the capacity for conversion. As you see it in your teacher here, may you also become it. -Beloved Kuthumi

I grew up with nothing and nobody ever told me I could do anything. I never knew my father, and my mother wasnt the best, most stable person. My grandparents raised me, and my grandmother never really connected with me. I just had a home. So I was kind of left to my own self. When I found out that nobody had ever graduated from high school in our family, I wanted to be the first one to graduate. By the time I was 11, I wanted to be a comedian. So all those years later, Ive managed to achieve my dream as a kid, and it wasnt easy. Im on the Walk of Fame and Im one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in America, according to Time Magazine. I think my duty is to go back and tell kids, Whatever color you are, wherever you come from, anything and everything is possible. And Im living proof.

To accept Christ is to receive Him by faith as your Lord and Savior. But, strictly speaking, the great thing to see is that God has accepted Christ. He took our sins upon Himself, died to make propitiation (the sacrifice which removed the anger of God) for them. But God raised Him from the dead and has taken Him up to glory. God has accepted Christ in token of His perfect satisfaction in His work. Believing this, the soul enters into peace. I simply rest in Gods thoughts about His son.

From the time I was 7 or 8 years old, we were the roughest knockabout act that ever was in the history of the theater, not only in the United States but all over Europe as well. We used to get arrested every other week--that is, the old man would get arrested. The first crack out of the box here in New York state, the Keith office raised my age two years, because the original law said that no child under 5 could even look at the audience, let alone do anything. So they said I was 7. And the law read that a child can't do acrobatics, can't walk a wire, can't juggle--a lot of those things--but there was nothing said in the law that you can't kick him in the face or throw him through a piece of scenery. On that technicality, we were allowed to work, although we'd get called into court every other week, see.

In high school, there are so many cliques. You're never safe. In between my junior and senior years, I went away to film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and I came back ready to do the things with my friends that we always did, but things change. People get older, and there are some inside jokes that you don't know about that have happened. You feel lost for a while, and it's hard to come back from that. Then the friends who have 'replaced' you are territorial. I've experienced that a little bit. There are catty, insecure, and gossipy girls everywhere, but for me, I don't think it's a matter of any of them being genuinely bad at heart. I just think that maybe the different ways in which people are raised make them different and insecure. They point out the bad things in others just to make themselves feel better. It's everywhere.

By Labor the North has subdued Nature, changed a parsimonious soil to fertility, built dwellings for almost her whole population, raised the school-house, established the Church, encircled the globe with her ships, and made her books and her papers to be as blades of grass and as leave of the Summer for number. But in the South, labor, a badge of shame, is the father of misery. The slave labors, but with no cheerit is not the road to respectability, it will honor him with no citizens trust, it brings no bread to his family, no grain to his garner, no leisure in after-days, no books or papers to his children. It opens no school-house door, builds no church, rears for him no factory, lays no keel, fills no bank, earns no acres. With sweat and toil and ignorance he consumes his life, to pour the earnings into channels from which he does no drink, into hands that never honor him. But perpetually rob and often torment.
